    It means that this is the standard from which to measure all other values.

    It's like the relative mass scale is based on 12C being exactly equal to 12

    So if you are asked for the relative mass of a 12C isotope then it is 12 by definition.

    The Celcius scale is based on the triple point of water being zero. So if you are asked for the melting point of ice in ºC, then the answer is zero by definition.
