Which UK universities are best ranked in Interior Design? I got my BA degree in Interior and Furniture Design and I would like do a MA degree in UK, preferably in London.
I found these courses on the internet, although I'm not sure about their ranking regarding Interior Design:
Chelsea (CAL) - Interior MA Central St Martins (CAL) - MA Design: Furniture London Metropolitan - Interior Design (MA) University of Westminster - MA Interior Design Kingston - MA product design - spatial design Middlesex University - MA Interior Architecture
I'm more into design then architecture, just for the record So if you have any suggestions, informations...please let me know.
Do the RCA do interior design? I know there's a london based college that specifically does interior design that is well regarded but i can't remember what it's called
Oh, that's brilliant! Can you please find out for me the name of that college?
And RCA doesn't have MA for Interior Design, just BA... I just checked on their web page... Jezus, the fees for overseas students are £21,800 per year!!

Funnily enough, I recently went to the Open Day for the MA at Chelsea with a friend who is considering applying. He seemed almost convinced that Chelsea was the course for him and didn't really bother looking elsewhere. This is likely because he was biased to the college, but who knows, he didn't really elaborate on that.
The course director seemed friendly and honest about what the course wishes to achieve with its students. He said the course was open ended and allowed the students to specify what they want from it, whether their final project was architecturally based or otherwise. The studio space provided isn't particularly big and the tutor admitted to that. The college itself is an amazing edwardian building situated right next to the River Thames, near the Houses of Parliament. I have heard stories about the new Millbank campus, but it really surprised me when I went. It's the type of college you'd want your friends and family to see. That aside, it's a relatively new course at five years old, but the tutors, as expected, had significant experience, although we only met the course director. He showed us various models past students had designed, explaining the project in detail. There was also a small booklet that you could take away that had work from the course.
Remember, I was only visiting, so I wasn't listening attentively. One thing I did grasp is that while the course encourages industry preparation it isn't focused on that. Oh, yeah, normally they prefer students who have studied a BA or have gained experience in Interior and Spatial Design beforehand, or related disciplines. My friend had studied Graphic Design, and another student who was there had studied Fine Art. The tutor was willing to accept students from other backgrounds, even non artistic, but did wager that the study proposal you write is important. The portfolio should also be concise and easy to understand. He prefers printed over digital as well.
Wow, there you go. Saves you having to go the Open Day for that one.

You're telling me. ... Wow, there you go. Saves you having to go the Open Day for that one.
wow, thank you so much! chelsea was my first choice as well. anyway, i went on their open day yesterday (not because i didnt believe you a thing you said, i booked the place before). i met the director, he showed us the rooms and some student works and told us about applying and studying... basically, i gathered most of useful new informations...but somehow i dropped a few things that you told me of, so your post was more then helpful. and as it was a whole new experience - you really feel the atmosphere of the place, now i want to visit other uni open days too!
And i know the fees are ridiculous, but to get a degree or MA from the RCA would be worth it...i hope
yep, but i guess if i manage to enrol on chelsae, would be worth it too. namely, their interior course director has pg dip from rca. hey, thank you for the inchbald information, i am going to check their site now...although i ve never heard of them:s
hmm...okay, they are on the bida;s list of accepted courses, but they look a little bit weird...i ll try contact them, as they are not offering much information on their site. cheers lady!

Hahaha - I was considering applying there until I saw that about the fees too! And I think their MA programs are 2 years too...I really don't know what they could possibly teach you that is sooooooo much better that its worth paying 4 times as much as other programs.

Unfortunately, with postgraduate, institutions are entitled to set their fees to anything they like. If there's a demand (i.e. students applying) and they believe it's the appropriate amount to charge, they will.
Incidentally, how did your phone interview with Chelsea go?

I wrote about it in the other thread Pretty well I think, but I don't want to get my hopes up because you never know.
This is a little late for you I know, but for others interested in studying MA Interior Design it appears that the RCA will soon have an MA Interior Design course!
Following recent reorganisation, the School of Architecture & Design hopes to build on its strong reputation in 3D and spatial design and contribute to the current plans for an expanded academic offer with proposals for new courses in Interior Design and Design Theory. - From the RCA website!
