An Irish drugmaker has jacked up the price of a painkiller to nearly $3,000 a bottle. The drug is 22 times more expensive than when the company acquired it in late 2013.

A for-profit company increased the cost of a drug in order to increase their profits? Are you lying to me? That's absurd!

Maybe it isn't surprising, but it does show that capitalism is inherently unethical, and that regulations around drugs and patents are insufficient and wide-open for exploitation in their current form.

Surely there is some other company making the same product but selling it cheaper elsewhere?!
    This is clearly ****in extortion.

What would you say if that drug company were going under. No one else wanted to make the drug. By the company's going under, that drug would no longer be available to patients who much need it. The drug company, knowing that patients do not feel the brunt of a price increase, raise their prices to a new level which will save the company and ensure the continued access of the drug to patients. Unethical?

You cannot get the full picture from a headline.

If that were the case, I would say that we should nationalise it, comrade.

Look up the drug. It’s a combination of two other medications which are still available very cheaply (naproxen + omeprazole) so if the drug company wants to sell the combination at such a high price, doctors should prescribe and people should take two separate pills.

Nope, the company holds a patent over the drug's composition. It's actually a combination of two separate drugs that can be purchased affordably but apparently buying and taking them separately is not as effective as this company's combined formula, which cannot legally be replicated.
