    Hi everyone,

I was just wondering about the structure of tours for a Weapons Systems Operator streamed Rotary. I know you go on a foundation tour after specialist training but how long is this usually for? I know it must vary but just to get an idea?

Also after the foundation tour how frequently are you sent away and how long are these tours during the different stages of your career?

    Many thanks!

Hey Sunrise, unless things have changed massively since I retired as a WSOp 6 years ago, there is no such thing as a formal ‘tour structure’. How long you stay on a Sqn or unit depends on a number of factors, most of which are out of your control, but the general principle is that it comes down to service needs. Your first tour is likely to be quite lengthy as you gain your CR (Combat Ready) category and develop experience in role – look upon it as an apprenticeship. For reference, my first tour on an ISTAR platform was 8 years, followed by ground tour (4 years), further Sqn tour (6 years), OCU Instructor (ground and air, 4 years), Sqn (2 years on one – disbanded, 4 years on another), Sim instructor (1 year) Capability deleted, retirement.

I chose to stay with the same platform and base for my career. You might choose to move between platforms and capability types (eg, ISTAR, AT), which would change the picture, but that would be a decision to be negotiated between you, your current Sqn command structure and your desk officer at Manning. The service may decide to move you, but that would also be negotiable (maybe!).

As I never did RW, I can’t say what tour pattern they operate, but I have several serving pals who may be able to assist. If the above doesn’t answer your concerns, PM and I’ll get onto my mates.
