So yeah, I thought it'd be interesting to see how many users on TSR are into Pink Floyd, since the last Pink Floyd society died sometime ago :o: Hopefully if enough of us are into it, we can get a proper society/discussion/whatever going...

Anywhoo here's the part where I profess my fanhood of pink floyd: I got into it when I was 11 when my Dad (in a brief burst of reminiscence) went and got some of their CDs. Apparently he used to listen to them when he was younger or something :p: Anyway, since then they've become my favourite band and I was quite gutted when I didn't get tickets to live 8 and I was really pissed off when Syd Barrett headed to the great gig in the sky (RIP, really bad pink floyd joke, I know :o:)

A few of my favourite albums would be:

The Dark Side of The Moon
Animals
Wish You Were Here
The Wall
The Piper at the Gates of Dawn

Pink Floyd is a band with a massive history/discography so I'm not gonna say I've listened to all their songs or whatnot. But the ones I've listened to, I really love since they, as a band, are not afraid to make long drawn out guitar solos (like "Dogs" in the album Animals). Nor are they afraid to talk about the injustices of war/modern society, in a way that Tracy Chapman and The Black Eyed Peas never could  In short I find real passion behind their music, and while, with the exception of The Wall, you can't headbang to most of their songs, they're excellent anyway.

Anyone else have any thoughts?

Amen to that. Need to listen to more of their stuff TBH, I like what I've heard.

You've missed Meddle. Echoes is the greatest piece of music ever written

(Without Syd Barrett) Pink Floyd are truly amazing.

:frown: Syd's stuff was incredible too. Just way more spacey then the Gilmore era.

Animals is one of my top favourite albums, Piper is great too and I tend to think of WYWH as one of the best albums ever, not that I love all of the music*, but in that it just all fits so perfectly. (I know, having rather a long extended song helps there, but Dark Side is in the same vein - they're just masters in that skill.)

Well that's decided my soundtrack to the early evening, thanks!

*er, well I do, but I mean, more than other albums' music.

If you like Pink Floyd you've got to watch Live At Pompeii it's awesome.

I love The Wall with all my heart. Similar situation to yours with my Dad whacking it on in the car on the way to school a good few years ago now. I've never looked back that's for sure : )

I never listen to The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn. Atom Heart Mother, WYWH, Meddle and The Wall for me!

I dunno, I wouldn't say better, or more amazing, but just different, I think they're both great, but incomparable cause they're really different.

Anywhoo right now, I'm listening to Shine on You Crazy Diamond, which has to be one of the greatest Pink floyd songs

Btw, is this just me, or does anyone else get really guilty when listening to Time (Dark Side of The Moon), when they realise they've just been wasting time instead of getting things done, tempus fugit and all that :P

So, just as a (very) early check, would anyone here be interested in joining if this became an actual soc?

I felt obliged to give them a listen seeing as they were more or less the start of Progressive Rock. I've only got The Wall so far but I like it (:

My dad saw them twice on the Dark Side of the Moon tour and the Wall. So. Jealous.

Heard Wish You Were Here a few years ago on the radio, and have never looked back...

Piper is the definitive PF record, Dark Side is too slick but still a great album. Piper.... just has IT.
