Writing essays and anything which involves writing
I wanted to write a 'views' article for the BMJ. I know it will be hard to get them to accept it etc but is it worth spending that time to get it accepted? Or should I just try and write something else like a literature review or something else?

Also, are there BMA essay competitions for medical students?

Do you suggest anywhere else where I can use my writing skills?

There are loads of essay competitions - the RSM website lists the numerous specialty ones they run here.

You could also look into writing blogs/articles to medical education related websites. Students 4 best evidence and TeachMePhysiology, for example, are looking for people to contribute to their sites!

There are indeed loads of essay competitions knocking about as highlight above. There are also lots of blogs which are often looking for writers and some medical schools have gazettes/magazines. If you're interested in journalistic writing it may also be worth checking out the Clegg Scholarship - the deadline for this year has passed but it takes place every year.
