Incidentally, and not assuming anything here, if you're looking for an indication of the mathematical level you need for oxbridge, i wouldn't worry about ums, rather step grades, anything other 550+ ums is indicative of high ability, but i wouldn't call a 595 mathmo better than a 560, you simply can't tell.

I agree - just look at the scores of that guy who's name I've forgotten ( ) who's got golds in the IMO. Most of the people on his thread have as good/better a-level scores than him, but he's in a completely different league.

I know it was a LONG time ago, now, but can you remember your individual, or, if not, your total marks for maths and further? If you can, and don't mind displaying them here, I'd be mucho gratified

Relative now doing maths at Oxford ended up with 586/600 maths, 566/600 Further maths, comprising P1-6, M1-4, S1 and 2. They don't know your modules at interview though, or even after you finish all your A2s- the unis only get grades not module results. Of course that may change in future, all this talk about letting them know whether you got a scrape A or a super A, or getting your module results, to make it easier to choose. But for those applying this year at Oxford, tutors are more interested in the results of the maths test they give you at interview, from what I've heard, and the problems they give you to do at interview.

I got golds/best in schools at various maths challenges, and did quite well in the international one when I took it, but got v bored with maths a level so crashed out. Retook it last year, worked for a few weeks and got an A though, but not a massively high A (~530 IIRC). Further maths I ended up sacrificing as I couldn't timetable all the lessons, and there was no way I was going to get an A with half the lessons, especially when I didn't need it enough to bother doing the work myself.

Paul Jefferys won gold last year at the IMO, I wonder what he's got this year... I'll ask him if I ever meet him at Cambridge. Anyway, I did the BMO when I was still first year. Got into the 2nd round, which means I was in the top less than 100 for a year. I am never bothered about full marks on any papers. People who goes arround showing off their full marks at A'Level are shallow and so are those going around showing off their As in General Studies. If any of you are interested in tough maths problems, do a search on google uk. Plenty past papers to be found there. (I am no longer a maths whore, however.)

That's the guy I was referring to - he was in the paper having got something like 10A's at A-level and it printed some of his scores. I think he got a gold in the IMO again this year. I got into BMO round 1 last year and round 2 this year (didn't do very well though  )

I can't even remember if I ever got my score, though it was back in 2001. I got an Exam Board "Top 5" Award for both Maths and Further Maths, so it must of been 95%+ or something. But I agree with what has been said above, when I was doing the BMO2/FST stuff, not everyone had 100% on their A-Levels. At the higher end of the scale (above 90%, say) UMS is a pretty poor indicator of differing abilities.

People who are clever, like that friend of mine who's got an S on STEP II, are normally careless when it comes to easy questions. I guess that really explains it.

It really depends on what else you do. If you only do one other subject, then you would be expected to get very high grades. If on top of Maths and Further Maths, you do a few others, then marks can be lower, as happened to a few pretty good people at my school. My M4 and M6 exams came in after about 30 others, so I really couldn't even try to get 100s. It's no excuse though, but I didn't do anywhere near to what I thought I'd do, especially failing M6. It didn't matter in the end as the other modules were good enough to still get straight As in all the maths qualifications.

Not claiming that im clever but I lost 51 marks on 2 a-levels overall, of which 42 were lost on P1, S1 and D1 the three easiest modules. Most people in my maths class beat me on these modules, but i doubt that many could get SS on Step...

I can't even do basic Trig  I'm applying for English Lit though

We can gather that. The title of the thread might just give you a hint as to why maths is discussed here.

Hey u bloody people. I woke up feeling special. I have an a in math (542) a in futher(537) a in futher advanced( 519) and that is relatively bad in comparison. To the people who got 90+ in p5 i am impressed that module is pretty tough going. Overall you have post some incredible results

I agree with you, guys. The first maths modules are the easiest, but they are also the most difficult to get 100.Everybody is doing well on these papers, so dropping a single raw mark would mean you miss it.( Oh, my boring time spent on perfecting my answer, searching for every possible slips and adding a lot of redundant stuffs that save you just a few marks ) However, some later modules are also difficult to get 100, but in a different sense.( The recent P6 paper (edexcel ) was really challenging ). I like the types of maths in the BMO and Steps, but I am also delighted to see many 100 in my result. Isn't it nice ?
Mine is:

@lgs98jonee: Well, I am not joking about P6. I took it last year, along with P1, P2 ( at my school ) and M4,P4 ( in a different centre ). My school is so stupidly rigid that they do not allow student to do modules on themselves. Even worse, they said that I could not study my 4th subject ( further maths ) because I need time to imporve my English.( it sucks  , they just care about their result performance ) I enrolled in an 18-month course, so I only could try to do some modules in the first year, hoping to perusade them let me do on my own the rest. And I succeeded.
Congrats your 100 on P1, you must be very careful. Keep going
@Chiggy: It varies. For P1, about half a day ( just read the mark scheme and note down important steps like how to come from root of 20 to 2*root of 5  This mistake costs me 2 marks the first time, but the second time, I don't know  )
For M6, it is roughly 2 days. But I have done almost all questions in the Edexcel book with carefully written solutions, so does not take much time.

I've now graduated from Oxford in maths with a 2.1.

You're right, it's a long time since A levels! I've heard the new ones aren't as hard now as they used to be, but that might be rubbish. Btw, I had stopped going to lesons by the time we did p6 cos the A grades were in the bag already. As you see, oyu don't need all 100%, you DO need to be supersharp at interview.
