@DamianHolt: Yeah, I agree with you. I have seen the past papers of the previous examinations, and they are obviously much more difficult than the current papers. Moreover, Edexcel has a boundary system which states that if you get a raw mark higher or equal to the A+ 2*(A-B) ( Where A and B are the raw marks for an A and B of that particular paper ) , you will get 100% .( Of course, some papers like P1, A+2*(A-B) >75, so they take 75 as the 100% boudary. )Consequently, for a paper M4 in 2003, you can lose up to about 10 marks and can still get an 100%.(unfair, isn't it ? )
Well, I also believe that the interview is crucial, but since I did not apply for Maths, I don't know much about the "supersharp" stuffs required...

last year some guy from our school got 100% or 99% in all 20 modules (Edexcel). Cambridge wrote to our college to say how good he was......

I have just applied to Downing, Cambridge and these are my module marks so far........:-

NM:80

What does NM mean

Reply 43

Way to dig up a dead thread... Anyway, I'd imagine it's Numerical Methods.

Did no one do up to M6?

Reply 45

I know ppl from my country with 590-600/600 in 5 A levels and they didnt get a place...

PANIC EVERYONE!!!

No actually the meaning of this is that modules don't really count individually

I did. I did all of them. Nobody gives a damn about your marks here. You need to show yourself at the interview. That's all.

PS: to all those with all 100's for all the modules (or so you claim): Either you are a geek (retarded) or are lying. The tutors here do not like people with no life and people, who don't climb out of their room, so I suggest you go and do something fun. The tutors don't even care what marks you got in the individual modules anyway. Most of them don't even know what the modular system is or anything.

To be fair, maths is probably the easiest subject to get 100s in if you're competent, since if you know everything in a module, which isn't all that much, there's no reason why you should get any questions wrong. Plus there's the scaling - I got 100 on M3 when my maximum raw percentage was less than 95% due to unanswered questions.

hehe yup I LOVE maths for that reason alone!

Certainly agree here. While I'm at oxford for physics, the tutors really didnt care too much about my 5 (non gen. studies) a-levels, they only wanted 3 As, thus putting the value on an A in Economics/Politics on the same level as an A in F.Maths. Admittedly i'm doing phys not maths, but the point still remains.

what if those 100's are accompanied by 2 bronze and a silver medal in the International Mathematical olympiad?

I'm not talking about me here. Also I know this guy personally and he doesn't seem such a geek IMO.

Not to mention International Physics Olympiads...

The guy just raped us each time there was a national contest. We always fought for second place.

All medals? Not bad. You obviously don't mean the certificates, do you?

no I mean a 20+ score out of 42. The kid is a phenomenon. And our education system is not an equivalent to those of other countries. I mean no other kid here ever made it that far. If the chinese guys trained him he was going for gold 100%

But I just wanted to point out that getting a 600* in A level maths does not necessarily mean u are lying nor that u are a geek.

That is, again, a good point. But I think that apart from exceptionally rare exceptions, people who do get 600 in A level maths are geeks/liars. But as I say, there are (and always will be) exceptions in life.

Not really... I'm neither a genius nor a hard-worker and I got 4 100s. If you're good enough to do maths at university, A-Level should really be very easy.

I think I'd change that to "if you're good enough to do maths at oxbridge..."

there are plenty of unis whose maths courses don't require an A in maths
