What are your thoughts? is it possible to have either or does macOS simply not support the tools and software needed?

    MacOS is fine.

I use a Linux distribution personally as it's free and I have no need to use Windows.

    I'm using a ThinkPad T440p.

Most of the time you can do it with all of them. Occasionally you may have certain tools only supported by windows but shouldn't be often that you have to use that specific one. Plus universities tend to have computers available to work on so you can use those if you get into a situation like that. There's also virtual machines you can set up too.

So honestly, just go for the one you want. Like I have a couple friends doing computer science who love using Macs for their work. I personally prefer windows although I have Linux on dual boot. My boyfriend tends to mostly work on Linux.
