I understand glucagon is the hormone which stimulates the alpha cells and all of that, but where does cAMP come into this? I understand the second messenger model and how it catalyses glycogen into glucose, but as somebody who tends to think too deeply about things, I do not know how the two (glucagon and cAMP) work together to produce glucose? What's glucagon's role if cAMP is the one catalysing glycogen to glucose? Ahhh.

    Existential crisis lmao.

    And thanks in advance

Glucagon is the first messenger - the molecule which instructs cAMP to catalyse glycogenolysis. Glucagon controls rate of glycogenolysis, cAMP responds to the levels of glucagon

In which case cAMP may not be the secondary messenger for glycogenolysis - but the principle is the same, the non-steroid hormone acts as the first messenger
