    Hello,

I am about to fill application for student loan and maintanance loan for 2nd year of my course. I am going to have a surgery which will make me incapable to work for over 28weeks and I will get DSA allowance. I will be receiving SSP from my work and then ESA allowance.

When doing application I am stuck at point 'Do any of the circumstances below apply to you'. I am not sure if 'you're able to get some disability related benefits' means DSA allowance? DSA service said its support and not repayable loan. Will getting DSA allowance and receiving goverment sick pay affect me getting student maintanance loan negatively?? DO you reccomend seeing any financial advisor and if so, can you recommend any(preferrably free) advisors?

    thanks
    Hi Kitty,

Disabled Students Allowances (DSA) is not the same as disability related benefits. The Disabled Students Allowances (DSA) can help towards additional costs students may face as a result of their disability, long term health/mental condition or a specific learning difficulty. The DSA will be in addition to the student finance package, it is non repayable and does not depend on the household income, but will depend on the students Study Needs Assessment which helps us determine the support the student needs to carry out their studies.
Student Finance would only consider taxable income when assessing your finance.
If your are receiving benefits I would suggest that you contact the benefits agency to check if your benefits will be effected if you are receiving Maintenance Loan and if you apply for Disabled Students Allowances (DSA) this will not effect you.
    Thanks

Thank you, it clarifies things a bit. I am not getting any benefits. I only got Maintanance Loan and I will be receiving SSP and ESA allowance. ESA allowance is not considered 'benefit' to my understanding but 'sort of continuation' of SSP when you can't return to work after 28 weeks. Is this correct?? I am just trying not to mess up my finances by not understanding something.

    thanks
    Hi Kitty ,

Yes, that is correct ESA (Employment support allowance ) income based in non taxable.

    Thanks

    Louise
