    They tend to last longer if they represent a 'safe' seat, eg, one where the majority for their party is very large and unlikely to be lost even when the country turns against their particular party.

    Some MPs have been in their seat for decades, but the average is currently 8.7 years.

    The longest serving current member is called the 'Father of the House' and right now that is Ken Clarke, who has been a member since 1970.

    I think that changed. From 2011, the term of a government is 5 years. However, there are conditions that can force a new election

    5 years usually but parliament can call for an election at any time between the 5 years (like they did last year)
