Salford v Manchester Met?

Well people who go there are obviously going to be biased and back it up with positive stats, but im sure if anyone could be bothered, they'd present facts showing the opposite, and how there are many many better institutions out there...so id say Salford.
I’m told Salford Uni is very close to Manchester United’s Old Trafford….so it would have been a perfect university for me! And the politics department is held in high regard there too.

That well may be true but the a lot of students at Salford are mancs anyway, for varius reasons they wanted to stay local and with Manchester wanting AAAish for most courses now people like me had very little choice. I am sure I could have got into a better university with my ABb but I would have had to move out of Manchester and I went to university to learn rather than have a three year party.

Salford is about 1.5 miles away from Old Trafford where as MMU is about 2.5. The two universities are only half an hour walk away.

I understand what you say, but despite my signiture, Im only confirmed, now I have my A-levels and I am now tied to Salford, I haven't actually studied there yet, but from an outside perspective, it impressed me more.

By the way, my A-level results well exceeded the entry requirements to Salford, but hopefully I won't regret my decision.

Oh by the way I love The Smiths, I went in to ASDA about 2 weeks ago to buy the album for £11 and it came up £o.o1p so they had to sell it to me.

Then you be pleased to know that the Smith's played at The University of Salford in 1985

A lot of people on my course had above the requirements too me included, but I found the ones with better A levels tended to get the best degree marks.

Please, pay me no heed, when I say I exceeded my entry requirements...

..I needed 200 (DDC) - I got 320 (BBC/c), but one only hopes university won't strike me with constant migraines and psycological distress, and one also hopes university wont bore me to death and wish I could analyse traffic light patterns for a challenge.
I love MMU anyway  The thing I like about Salford, is how its all seperate and away from the busy Oxford road, my cousin went there and loved it. But then again the building I study in is also far away from the rush. The whole reason why I chose MMU to stufy psychology, was because they wanted Alevel grades that were much higher than what Salford wanted and that Salford wasnt registered with the bps, so doing that degree in salford would have been a waste of my time. I remember reading last years top 100 university lists and I think Salford was higher ranked than MMU in some aspects, but then MMU was migher in facilities and employment etc... No one can really say which is the better one, unless they have done every degree in both unis. But if youre choosing between both of them, check the ranked university degree subject lists (which can be found somewhere on the net and in the guradian) and see which one is higher ranked for that particular degree.

Yeah in that case then MMU was the best choice for you, I don't think Salford does have a very good reputation for psychology. Salford's main strengths are the sciences, language, art and design and performing arts.

I needed 220 for mine but I got 270.

I think Salford just recently started psychology, so it probably doesnt have a good rep yeh, I think it asked for 180, whereas MMU wanted 240 and I got much higher  but Man uni rejected me :frown:

AT82, you seem to be rather Salford-University-Patriotic, seen as though you have finished, and I am to start, any advice about the old school? Were you ever in "da peel" - please excuse colloquialism, just thought it would be funny.

Does the time go fast? No, I mean REALLLLYY fast.

It does especialy the 3rd year but it also gets very strefull by then. I was in the Telford Building but they are pulling it down now becuase its a 1960's concrete eye sore.

My advice to you is to get your head down and attend most lectures.

Wise Words of Unheard Wisdom.............sorry just being sarcastic but yeah pragmatically, your right, I am quite punctual anyway. When you say stressful, surely not as stresful as the old A-levels? I'm concerned about timetable - What was your latest timetabled day ending?

Yes I forgot about that, plus whats this north west business? Its one of the best nursing schools in the country, the last time I checked it ranked above Manchester in this area. Plus Salford has a brand new building for this I believe.
yer it is the best
we'll be movin to the new building in october, named after the legendary mary seacole, beats peel house in eccles any day

Well.. i would argue that is difficult to compare Salford and MMU. MMU is a more trendy university and extremely popular, wheras salford had possibly unifairly been left behind in the 'lets all go to uni in manchester' thing. I'd definately say Psychology is better at MMU, mostly because Psychology is a new subject to Salford (althought it IS BPS accredited) but it really does depend on the subject as to which is better. Some courses like politics, sciences, languages are nationallly very highly rated at salford. When I was applying to uni i was told by an MMU lecturer i knew that although the teaching there is very good, the degrees are often not valued appropriately by employers. I study at Salford and have enjoyed my time there (now in my final year :frown: ) and my degree is well thought of by the specific employer that i have just secured a graduate scheme with:biggrin: However, i must admit, had MMU offered my course i probably would have gone there because its nearer to where I live in Manchester and, as the popularity of the uni increases, so will the standards and the reputation !

Salford seems to do better with keeping their students though, Salford has much lower drop out rates. I think there is a general feeling that Salford is more about studying and getting a degree and MMU is more about partying. There are expections to this though it really does depend on the course largely.

One area where Salford does do a lot better than MMU is research, its ranked about 36ish nationaly for this area if I remember correctly. Salford does very well for spending per PhD awarded.

For 18 year old wanting to have a three year party MMU is indeed a much more attractive proposition, but Salford is a lot cheaper in terms of rent.

I feel that Castle Irwell is a bit too far out though and the area lacks everything that Fallowfield has.

That area needs a lot of investment, a few nice student friendly bars, some new student flats and better security and it will be more attractive. Frankly I was so glad I didn't live in Salford when I was there.

I agree it depends on the course I chose MMU over Salford not because of wanting to party as I am not the party type but because I was offered a combined honours degree place at MMU and a single subject degree place at Salford. As both departments had the same rating I decided the combined honours offer was better for me. I feel for students with disabilities MMU is stronger however.
