How Does Student Accomodation Work?

Hey everyone!

I've just been offered an unconditional to UoN for this September which I'm going to accept, and I'm now looking at accomodation. I'm an international student (Australia) and back home almost no one does student accomodation with some exceptions, so I'm not really familiar with how it works. I've looked at the videos online and have got a rough idea of how it operates, but still have a few questions:.

1. When / How do you apply for it?
2. Do you get to choose which "hall/building?" you live in, or is it more of a first in first serve or random assortment?
3. With that, do you get to choose which kind of room you get?
4. Which Halls are generally considered the best or more sociable?

Ideally I'd like to choose a room with an ensuite and bigger bed, but from what I've heard it seems like you just get given a random room? Or do you put down preferences?

Any help / advice is super helpful as I'm a bit lost!
When / how you apply depends on the uni and accommodation so I can’t give specifics. Usually online though, generally in the summer. June-July time.

Whether you choose the halls again depends, sorry again I don’t know about UoN specifically. Often times you will choose say 3 accommodation is preference order, and they try to put you in the one you want. Often is first come first serve.

Most ask whether you want a specific type of room (e.g en-suite, studio or regular etc).

I’ve no idea about UoN accommodation specifically so can’t say which ones are best.

1. When / How do you apply for it?
Depends on the Uni, but normally months before Uni starts.
2. Do you get to choose which "hall/building?" you live in, or is it more of a first in first serve or random assortment?
Most Uni's Allocate rooms in the following order (Ordered from priority to least priority):
Unconditional + Firm (First come first serve)
Conditional + Firm (First come first serve)
Unconditional + Insurance (First come first serve)
Conditional + Insurance (First come first serve)
Clearing (First come first serve)
3. With that, do you get to choose which kind of room you get?
You won't get to choose the exact room you're in, but you'll get to choose the Hall you want to be in (All vary in features and price) and the type of room you want (Varies for Uni's)
4. Which Halls are generally considered the best or more sociable?
All dependant on the Uni, but the best halls/most sociable halls I've heard are the Catered halls as a large amount of students all eat in the same dining cafe so you can meet new people and stuff, Less time spent cooking/cleaning plates but socialising and eating

Congrats on your offer btw!

Oh okay, because I'm firming an unconditional like pretty much now, I should be sorted on choosing which one I want? Ideally I want a catered one and a 3/4 bed and en suite, so by those standards I should most likely get it? Of course the exact room wouldn't matter, its just those specifics would be very ideal.

Thanks for your reply!

You should get it. Just apply now because of course, you're not the only person with an unconditional offer to the uni of your choosing.
