    A lava spine, built up in the aftermath of the devastating 1902 Mt Pelee eruption. These spines are built by lava-dome forming volcanoes which can cause dangerous pyroclastic flows called Nuees Ardentes.

    Different scale entirely, the Deccan Traps in present-day India erupted about 66 million years ago and over a period of a few million years pumped out enough CO2 to cause dramatic climate change which is likely part of the cause of the K-Pg mass extinction (that killed off the dinosaurs). These eruptions were not explosive but involved vast quantities of magma and gas being generated over a long period of time.
