Hi there.

I have just recently submitted an assignment for my maths module which included me having to create a matlab code to solve an equation on my university course

However on this particular report, the originality report is available to the students and i had no concerns when submitting this assignment in turnitin as everything was properly cited and not plagiarized.

However after submitting when i checked the originality report, i realised that a Section of my code was highlighted when using a method to solve the equation and linked to a website of a forum from 4 years ago. There are differences in the code however the general look and format/structure of it does look the same and the big coloured highlight on the text really makes the similarities stand out

I have 100% not copied this and i didn't even come across this post when i was doing the assignment, nevermind copying it. It has got me really worried as i don't want the maker to get the wrong idea after seeing the highlighted text.

After my initial sort of panic and actually started to think about it, i thought maybe a reason why this is, is because some people may have the same code style/structure and because solving the equation is objective there maybe similar answers as to how to solve it because there's only so many ways a line of code can be written. However i could be completely wrong.

I was just wondering, if anyone has had any experience from this or not. Is this a regular occurrence and does this tend to happen often?

I am contemplating speaking to the unit leader about my concerns but i don't know if this would be a good idea or not.

If anyone could over some advice to try and calm my nerves, it would be much appreciated

If it's a small part of the assignment it probably won't matter. Talking to them won't really achieve anything since a plagariser wouldn't admit to it anyway so you don't get benefit of the doubt in these situations.

Thanks for the response. It's a small part of my essay. My essay was about 3000 words and My code i think is about 60 lines. About 6 continuous lines of it is properly highlighted relating to the same forum (with some big differences in the code although big similarities also) and the rest is fine.

So should this be okay or not?

Probably. There are only so many ways to code something so you're bound to have similarities.

It's code, the similarity will almost certainly be very high. They won't take much notice of the code itself and will look more at the comments. The only time I've seen someone get reprimanded for code similarity was when someone told on them, and even then it was pretty much impossible to prove so they just got a warning.

Don't worry about it.

Thanks. And which university was this for
Sheffield. And academic integrity is usually enforced very harshly here.
