How does buying and cooking food work on week 2 in the student accommodation work? Do you get to choose and make your own food or choose it as a group? I’m worried that if the whole group has to choose that they’ll choose foods I don’t like and I’m a very quiet person and no one usually listens to me, so I might not eat the food if they choose stuff I don’t like. Ideally I want to choose and cook all of my own food for the week but I don’t know if i can or not.

It depends on your provider. Some NCS providers set a budget for the week, you can choose to spend this alone or pool together with a group or as a team to get more value for money and better items. These providers also allow use of cooking equipment and you make hot proper “meals” yourself on programme. Other providers will have a list of groceries from a supermarket, the group will decide on what to buy and then everyone will get chance to say anything they particularly want. These providers usually also provide an evening meal from the uni canteen where everyone has the choice of what’s on the menu that night, so in reality all you’ve got to be fussy over is cereal and sandwiches. In my experience, you will not be left out, and all of the food is pretty basic stuff, you’ll be fine. If you’re worried whilst you’re there speak to staff and they’ll make sure you don’t go hungry.
