I want to be a lawyer and I wanted to know what it actually is like. Is being in-front of the magistrate usually nerve racking? And how many days a week do you work? What is your average pay? And if anyone is: what is the average case about when you’re a family lawyer?

Also, is a law degree hard?

I’m in year 9 and choosing my choices or GCSE soon

So you want to become a family barrister?

Your GCSE subjecsts will play 0 (yes, zero) role in getting to where you want to be in your career, so don't worry about them. Pick subjects you enjoy and are likely to do well in.

On the topic of what family barristers do, you may wish to post your question in the Legal Careers section: https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=263 . There are a few aspiring pupils/practising barristers who will be able to offer an insight into that area.

P.S. You don't make arguments before magistrates in the family division
What do you mean? All arguments are submitted in paper form?

My bad, I thought that magistrates were only present in criminal cases. Turns out that they deal with family cases involving children as well https://www.gov.uk/become-magistrate ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It's okay. We love you anyway.

I thought you might have confused magistrates mainly dealing with criminal to mean they only deal with criminal. Then I realised I knew nothing about family law, so presumed you must have meant they have paper trials. We don't do this procedural family stuff in law degrees; it's fine that we don't know!
