So, I don’t know how others do the whole flatting thing but this is my first year flatting and I found this a bit strange. My flat mate baught a $250 washing machine a few weeks before I moved in without telling anyone else. I thought this was fine and we were happy to pay towards it as a group, assuming we would all equally own the washing machine. Or we do not pay towards the washing machine and she does what she wants with it at the end. ( I have done this with a freezer, anyone can use it but I will keep or sell at end) . However she wants us to pay a “rental fee” to use the washing machine at the end of the week, even though we pay for the power and water it uses . Not to mention she is a great friend of mine so I did not expect things to be this particular.
Opinions? I want to make sure I am not getting this situation wrong?

Tell her to stick a bottle of detergent up her ass if shes trying to charge you for using a communal washing machine.
On a slightly more serious note tell her that isnt what friends do - especially as everyone is paying for the power/water - on that though you could just tell her her share of the bills is going up as well :L

Tell her she has to pay rent for the space the washing machine is occupying.

She sounds greedy af and is just trying to make a little extra cash for herself by whatever means possible - even if it means scamming her friends. Yeah don't let the 'good friend' thing come into account here, I've have 'good friends' attempt to pull this shiz with me too. A genuine good friend would never do that but then - as life has taught me - a lot of people are happy to sell their loyalty for the right price.

What have the other flatmates said to her about this? Quite frankly I don't even know why you're asking us here, the minute she would have asked I'd have straight out said to her face 'no, just no!'

Yeah thanks for the answer. I did say no , I just needed some support, she made me think I was in the wrong, and no other flatmates are around at the moment to give a second opinion. 😊
