What is more important to universities; the 'strength' of your subject (how proper it is) or the grade you get?

Unless its a required subject, then almost certainly the grade. It could be a mix of both. 3x good grades is what you want. Subjects can open more courses.

yeh thought so, but am planning on doing history at uni and currently planning to do history, economics and politics at A-level, all three are fairly hard, would it be better to do history with two easier subjects say Business and PE, so I get hugger grades?

    Not PE not academic enough.

Your chosen ones are fine, unless you will perform poorly.

Classics or Eng Lit are ok, but those are fine.

Definitely the grade as long as it's not vocational.

It depends on the course: for a maths degree they will prefer a B in maths to an A* in English.
