M471 - Taiwan recognition motion, Connor27This house believes that Her Majesty’s Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs should instruct the diplomatic service to establish an embassy and diplomatic relations with the government of the Republic of China (Taiwan.)

This house also condemns the actions of successive governments of the People’s’ Republic of China for their continued hostility towards Taiwan, and imposition of trade embargoes upon any country that attempts to trade and/or establish relations with Taiwan.

"This house condemns the actions of the successive governments of the People's Republic of China"

What good could possibly come from pissing off China like this for no good reason? I was originally gonna abstain but upon reflection that pushes me to a damn right nay

It's an obvious no from me. China has more dollars in China than the US does - we can do nothing against a super power like that and angering a future potential trade partner after the messy business that is Brexit is in short, moronic.

I will have to abstain on this motion I'm afraid. I must say that this will cause an uproar with China and the international community. Not only will we strain our relations with China but we will most likely be condemned by other nations across the world.

Nay... this won't benefit the UK at all... and on the Taiwan side of things the current "British Office in Taipei" is rather effective in promoting the UK's interests in Taiwan without compromising relations with the PRC.
