I study Chinese at uni, and was told that by the end of our year abroad, we should be able to pass the HSK 5 exam. Would it be beneficial to sit an exam prior to the year abroad, perhaps HSK 3? Not sure if it would make a difference or not, provided that my language competency is at the same level.

I sat HSK3 last year and HSK4 this year. I would say there's definitely no need to take HSK3 as you said, but it might help you get a feel for the exam style - then again, you can just do that with an online practice. http://confucius.emory.edu/hsk_and_r...k_samples.html is the page I recommend - make the most of it while it's still available.
The full vocab lists are public knowlege. Since my HSK4 I've resolved to just start now slogging through the next levels' vocab, a few a day. Note that the vocab count jumps a lot in the higher levels.

I think by the time you finish your year abroad you will have acheived the level, if you've done two years before and one year abroad it should be not so difficult. I sat the HSK 5 after a bit of self study, 3 semesters in china, and self-prep when i came back home for a few months. So after 3 years and one year abroad you could just do the mock papers, no need to waste your money on the lower levels. Good luck!
