Aren't black dresses for white-tie events? For a prom/black-tie get a coloured dress.

I’ve got a black prom dress for this year and my close friends and family seem to all prefer it over my colourful options.

I didn't go to prom, but while I was still considering it I was wanting a black dress. As long as you're happy and comfortable in it it's fine

Mine is black this year-they can look really good and so much better than some coloured dresses. Go for what suits you, you feel comfortable in and like.

There were black dresses at my all girls prom. Go in whatever you want to wear, i wore a trouser suit and people really dont care as long as you look smart

I personally wouldn't go for black (too many funerals), but it's not inappropriate and if you have an interesting dress in terms of fit or decoration it won't be too dull even in black.
If you want to go for a black dress then go for it. What matters is that you like it and are comfortable in it.

I love it!! Definitely wouldn't be seeing that at a funeral. It's really interesting, go for it!
