The table shows the heights in a basketball team.
Height: 198, 199, 200, 201, 202
Frequency: 1, 3, 2, 5, 2
a.) Work out the mean height of the team. Round you answer to 1d.p.

That, I have worked out is 200.3; however, I require assistance with part b.

b.) A new player joins the team and raises the mean average height to 201cm. Work out the height of the new player.

You can call the height of the new player hh.

Then you are looking for the complete total height of all players. This should be straight forward as this is just (total height of all players in the table) + h

Then divide this by 14 and set it equal to 201.

Solve for h.

What do you mean by set it equal to 201? How do i do this?

New total = New mean X No. of players
So New total of heights = 201 X 14

Take it from there!

You write down your expression in terms of h, then an equals sign, then 201. What you will then have is an equation, which you should know how to solve to find the value of h.

all the original players heights = 2604
2604 h / 14 =201
x14
2604 h=2814
-2604
h=210cm
