I'm currently in my second year of a levels and am studying maths, however, our teachers are constantly saying how our course is a lot easier than the year below.

Does anyone know the distinct differences between them and care to illustrate what
    these differences indicate?

If you want to explore the differences between the specifications there are links in this thread:

Content wise the pure maths has not changed dramatically, the main difference being a greater emphasis on proof and problem solving. The applications content has changed so that both statistics and mechanics are mandatory. Many students (and some teachers) have avoided mechanics in the past due to the perceived difficulty.
Looking at practice papers from aqa and edexcel I have definitely had the feeling that the questions are more challenging than the old specification. Whether this is objectively true or that I just need to get used to a different style and a few additional content topics I don't know.
If the new specification is harder than the old one, grade boundaries will be lower to ensure similar final outcomes for students.
