Hi, I'm trying to apply for university and obviously UCAS require referees. My problem is that I've been out of education for 2 years and out of employment for 1 year so I have no one recent I can use as a referee. Any advice on what to do would be appreciated so much!

If you've been out of education for less than 5 years, most universities will expect an academic reference. Most schools and colleges will give references to people they remember, so contact an old tutor and see if they will help.

Otherwise, contact your old employer- again, it's totally usual to use ex-employers as a reference a few years later. Most jobs require two references and so a year is nothing as long as you left on good terms.

However, an academic reference is usually better!

Thanks for the advice, I was worried I was going to have to ask about entry without a reference but this is a big weight off my mind

Honestly it's totally usual to ask for a reference a year or two down the line- I'm sure your school will be happy to help. Make sure you email and check before putting anything on the application, though.
