They split the fraction.

u2u24=(u24)+4u24=(u24)u24+4u2+4=1+4u2+4\displaystyle \dfrac{u^2}{u^2-4} = \frac{(u^2-4)+4}{u^2-4} = \frac{(u^2-4)}{u^2-4} + \frac{4}{u^2+4} = 1 + \frac{4}{u^2+4}
