Writing this from a hostel in Japan!!

Just wanted to thank everyone in this thread, especially Tim, Fran, and gaijin. Had a big ole think on the 13 hour flight, and after being here for a couple of days and experiencing some things, I am sure that I want to apply to Sheffield. If I hadn't found this thread than maybe I would have never properly reconsidered going to Sheffield, so arigato gozaimasu to you all. Just got to go about reapplying now! I think I will drop Sheffield an e-mail directly, but if they can't fit me in that way I guess I will have to reapply via UCAS.

Well hit me up if you are still in Japan by next summer Raguna...
Wayhay you're in Japan. Cor. How is it?!

Yer yer, Sheffield is the way. 13 hours? I thought it was longer. Maybe not eh. Lucky you found this thread then - as the saying goes: "Everything happens for a reason" Well, depends. You may have to reapply through UCAS which would be irritating but yer emailing them may be good.

Hey - I was just looking at some of the league tables and I noticed that for East Asian Studies, Sheffield was ranked 7th out of 10. I don't get it - I thought it was supposed to be one of the best??
Who was it with, and who were the other Unis?

4 SOAS
5 Edinburgh
6 Leeds
7 Sheffield
8 Cardiff
9 Manchester
10 Oxford Brookes
I'm not doing Japanese, but I thought I'd just weigh in on this...
Oxbridge always come in at the top of these lists, even if they're not necessarily the best - you should always take the lists with a pinch of salt.

Odd how Nottingham is in there :s they don't even offer Chinese/Japanese/Hindi language courses

Rank Institution Student Satisfaction Research Assessment Entry Standards Graduate Prospects Overall Score
1 Cambridge 4.35 5* B 512 80 100.0
2 Oxford 4.07 5* B 533 70 97.6
3 Nottingham 5 B 390 0 94.0

9 Manchester 3.42 399 0 84.3
10 Oxford Brookes 3.69 335 0 82.8

Discounting Nottingham (as I'm not sure why it's there) You can see that Shef, Leeds and Edin are VERY close - but SHeffield's student satisfaction is second only to Cambridge - Beating Oxford.

I know but how come the research has such a low score??

I know but how come the research has such a low score??

From what I can gather it is not the QUALITY of the research, but rather the amount of staff who teach and do research? It has also been 7 years since they got this figure

"This provides a measure of the average quality of research undertaken in the subject area. The first figure gives a quality rating 5* (top), 5, 4, 3a, 3b, 2 or 1(bottom). The letter refers to the proportion of staff included in the numerical assessment, with A including virtually everyone and F hardly anyone. These data are taken from the last research assessment exercise in 2001."

So as you can see Sheffield has a HIGH score of 4, but a low proportion of staff members undertaking it. And logically the more people you have doing research the better quality you are likely to get (usually..) SO maybe this has changed since this evaluation was done. I think Leeds also collaborates with Sheffield, perhaps this too is not taken into consideration?

I'm not sure whether this is good advice: but as as an undergraduate shouldn't the quality of teaching and student satisfaction be more important as opposed to research ? In which it seems Sheffield trumps all but Cambridge?
Nottingham doesn't do Japanese so discount that (they do Chinese though I thought) Leeds goes abroad in 2nd year, and it really isn't as good as Sheffield, and Manchester is still relatively new. Edinburgh is more unheard of and their department ain't that great, but I wouldn't want to go so far away anyway. Cambridge is good, as is SOAS and Sheffield. League tables are a rough guide to be taken with a big pinch of salt as Mathy, Ace from Space says.

Satisfaction is indeed very high for Sheffield - highest out of them all from unistats which I'd use instead. It's 96%.

Solid research from SomeNextPirate :five: Sheffield has a high satisfaction and it's got, I've heard, pretty good staff in the SEAS department. No need to rely on tables so much. I'd say the top 3 are Cambridge, SOAS and Sheffield.

edit: And the TQA thing or whatever it's called, they always give 5* to Oxbridge and I've heard they're pretty biased. Well as in they already have a rough idea of what a department should have dependant on the Uni, before they've assessed it.

Ah right. Thanks

On the subject of Edinburgh's department not being so good - my UCAS mentor told me today that some guy in my school went there for Japanese and hated it.. said the department was **** and unorganised etc.. anyone else heard this?!

I've already got Edinburgh on my UCAS choices you see
Though I can see why you may be worried suddenly seeing that.

Edinburgh ain't that good really I don't think - gaijin knows more than me. They're less dedicated to East Asian Studies there and you learn less kanji at the beginning etc. But I could be wrong. Plus as it's in Scotland you take an extra year/other subjects.

If I were you, I'd just apply for Cambridge, Sheffield, SOAS, and Manchester if you really want it. Would you go to Edinburgh if you got in? Do you mind me asking where you'd like to go and where you've applied? I know this is a pro Sheffield thread but there are other good Unis for Japanese (namely Cambridge and SOAS ).
Reply 213
Well I haven't actually sent off my UCAS form yet.. nor have I even chose all my courses!

Well I'm deffooooooo applying to Sheffield. Like, if I get in - I want to go. I'm also applying to Manchester, and I think Leeds (for Japanese and Economics ). And then those are the only three I'm definitely applying to.

Meh - last year it was like my dream to go to Cambridge but looking into it more I don't know if it's the place for me. I probably wouldn't get in anyway with my grades but I'm really worried that if I apply and then get in I won't be able to turn down my place (I'd get KILLED at school). So it's definitely a dilemma. Oh and also I haven't started writing my PS yet lol :')

Then with Edinburgh - well I don't think the degree is actually longer is it? Cos one of the four years is abroad so it's the same as anywhere. In a way I kinda like that because it means everyone I know will still be at uni when I get back and I wont be a loner  But now I'm obv having doubts and stuff.

And with SOAS, (I think I'd apply for Japanese and Economics) the thing is that it's in London and that's just so expensive. Also my aunt knows someone who went there and dropped out after a year - apparantly it was a really antisocial place. :s-smilie:

True it's still only early September.

With Cambridge, you might as well. If you get in, you can reject you know! It shouldn't matter what your school would think..they don't matter as you'll be off to Uni anyway. That really shouldn't stop you. However if you don't think it's the place for you, don't bother. Then again, if you got in, would you go? If there's a possibility you might, go for it. But God don't feel forced into going there just because of what school/people would think. They really don't matter - you're leaving it all in less than a year anyway.

I'm not sure - haven't researched myself. I didn't get the last bit sorry - my mind's a bit slow today. How will people still be at Uni? Ehhhhhhhhh don't most people have 3 year courses? Doubts? God I need to wake up.

True, the London thing put me off and the fact that it's a very small Uni did too. People would still have fun I think, but 5000 students or so, including postgrad, is far too small for me. I'd rather do a postgrad degree there. Depends though - some people may prefer the smaller Uni and the fact that it's all Arts and Humanities subjects devoted to Africa and Asia.

Yeah I know it's not that other people are pressuring me to apply (though they would pressure me to go if I got in).. it's more like I am pressuring myself to. I mean I know if I got into Cambridge the course would be amazing and I'd have a great career/life etc but would I enjoy it?!?! Arghhh I have no idea how I will decide.

All the courses are 4 years in Edinburgh
Hmm I see. Well ignore about future prospects. To me (just my values etc) this is what's important:

Do I like the look of the course? You like the look of Cambridge so thumbs up here.

Will I be happy? Well you don't really know do you? Ok, why do you think you may not be happy there?

Ok got it now. Thanks ha.

Well yeah, obviously the course is great, get taught by world leaders etc, what is there not to like?!

Meh, just like it's the whole all work no play attitude. I think there's about 1 nightclub or something silly like that.. I mean I go out to town (clubbing) at least 2 times a month as it is.. 2 times a week on a good one :yy: and I don't want to be going out less when I go to uni!

I know obv the course comes first but when I've heard such great things about the course at sheffield and the city itself it just seems so much better suited for me - yet if I applied to Cambridge and got in I don't think I would have the courage to turn it down (let everyone down etc)

blehhhhhhh. :s-smilie:
Are you sure the nightlife's that bad? I see what you mean though, but surely people still have fun? I know someone who's going to Cambridge and she likes to club, 1/2 times a week.

Go Sheffield  Let who down? Argh I hate all that. See I don't really care but that's just me - I've done loads of things that my parents have been disappointed in, then they realised I've actually made the right choice. Sod everyone else, it's your life, not theirs. You do only get one life. So you wouldn't really want to go there if you got in? I wouldn't apply then - no point.

Well seems I'll be seeing you at Sheffield then

edit: Though doing Japanese requires more work anyway so we ain't clubbing 24/7. Socialising does happen though..just not as much as others
Reply 219
Lol I'm not planning on clubbing 24/7  That'd be a bit tiring :p: Meh I am pretty sure I can handle the workload and have fun too :proud:

Just yeah - I looked at the Cambridge subforums and I think the general opinion was that the nightlife was dire

Que sera, seraaaa
