I'm sure you'll be fine :france:
I basically said how I applied for all the wrong things but I have always harboured a love for japanese  and I would decline all my offers for university:"Sheffield"

I don't see why not. Overall both ABB & AAC is a very high achievement. Also If I'm right (I'm not 100% with it on A-Levels), don't both combinations work out overall to = 320 points? :o:

Yes, but they said ABB :holmes:

I'm aiming for AAA anyway but due to fail spectacularly, no doubt.

Thank you very much for replying jaybones and Keiron, it's much appreciated.

I feel slightly relieved! Just need to keep on trying my best to boost up my grades, learning japanese is a huge distraction though heh.. Hopefully I'll be able to write a great personal statement (thankfully there's lots of extracurricular activities for me to write about). Any tips where the personal statement is concerned? I've had a hard time finding example japanese personal statements..

yea dont worry bout ya grades :] easily sorted. I got BBC last year (and these were the grades that all the unis saw...dunno if they looked at my module grades) :|. But already bumped up my history (B) to an A with a retake, and will get an A overall if I get like... 50 marks from 2 exams in summer, because my coursework this year was pretty decent. Religion (c) is now an A (for AS) because i re-did the coursework...taught me not to leave coursework untill the night before :X C/W really is my best friend this year :]

P.S. I take it you are applying for 2010?
Reply 906
I worked out today that there's like 4 months or something before we start :excited:
:woo: gunna miss carefree juvenile life..speakin of which, I got my "poll card" for the European Election today...adulthood fast approaches...probably wont vote though. Got an exam the next day, so cramming will be in order.
KursedEG
Yep, I'll be applying to start in September 2010.

best of luck then :]

is Sheffield your first choice?
Reply 909
the general jist i'm getting from all this is

:P
Whey-hey, 2010 applicants are joining the party! It's where it's at, really.

Scour the thread. A current third year in Okayama posted his a while back.

KursedEG, hello

I going to reinforce what Jaybones mentioned. Flip the birdy at a BBD, study solid and I'm sure you will churn out some A's and B's.

My short story is, I studied a National Diploma Music Technology as my Major and Japanese as a minor @ College. For my major, I was predicted a triple Pass in my first year. I decided that I didn't want none of that, so logged off facebook, turned off the XBOX, studied hard and got a Distinction-Distinction-Merit (equivalent to AAB/320+ UCAS points), totally proved them wrong. Unfortunately I applied for BA Japanese way past the deadline so I got rejected. :eek3:
So I contacted SEAS and told them my sob story and how I was coming back to take over SEAS and a "please accept me next year, please please please" lol. I think it was Rick Siddle who I later met up with that said, "aww what a sad story, but how about chill out for a year, go to Japan and relax, come back and sumbit your UCAS application nice and early, making sure you nail your personal statement boy!"...so I did:biggrin:

My personal advice, if you really want it, never give up! Even if it means doing something else for one year to get there. Ace the personal statement and submit it nice and early. If you have not already, attend an open day. Tons of information and motivation after you leave an open day..or in my case two open days.
You can do it! :burnout:

I'll be there from 21st July until September the 4th. I'll be stay be staying in Sakai City again but will most likely use and abuse a J.R Rail pass as usual. I think Fran is coming out mid august for a few weeks too. What you thinking, you wanna meet up out there?

Might be out there on the fag end of that. Wrote on my visa application I'll arrive at narita on the 16th of September - but the reality is, I'm coming three weeks earlier to both mooch off my g/f and get settled in Tokyo. My university in Japan might go apesh*t - but as long as I have somewhere to stay during those 3 weeks, they can hardly complain.

Also your story inspires hope and also proves that Sick Riddles is indeed a legend!

Grades are pretty pointless tbh, unless your A-levels are in Japanese. I didn't even do A-levels for christ sake. Its all about having the mental stamina and an incredible passion for Japan/Japanese in some way to keep you going. The only disadvantage I seem to have on this course is my essay writing in exams. That's one regard where people having done A-levels are better prepared than me I guess.

Well for what it's worth, like guy_incognito said I posted mine earlier in the thread. Here, specifically.

As for general tips... well, can't think of much off the top of my head. The structure of it is definitely important - back at school we were advised to basically split it into
Paragraph 1 - Introduction - what made you want to pick this course at this university?
Paragraph 2 - How will the subjects you studied at school help?
Paragraph 3 - How will extra curricular activities and personal interests/hobbies help?
Paragraph 4 - Some kind of general conclusion.

Anything you can think of that's relevant (or, at the very least, can be twisted to be relevant) is worth putting in providing you don't end up rambling. Starting to write it is always the hardest bit, though really I just put pen to paper (well, fingers to keyboard) somewhere in the middle and built everything around it through constant redrafting.
The conclusion is a bit simple really. There has to be some end purpose for spending four years doing this crazy s**t, which is usually what you will do at the end of the degree. I just mentioned something about working in Japan and doing some translation work etc. At the end of the day, there should be some higher purpose for you doing this degree right?

Speaking about personal statements, here's the one I sent off to Japan.

Absolute ********, every word of it.

Yamanote Line to Shibuya station. Hit the south exit and head over the bridge and at the bottom of the steps, there's a family mart on the right hand side of the street. About a short 5 minute walk to a small junction and The Room is across the road in the basement of the corner building. You'll know when you see it because of the red lantern which you cant miss. :burnout:

If there's anyone here who's still deciding between doing a single or dual honours degree, you may be interested in part of an email we just got sent.

1. You have a 40-credit dissertation rather than a 20-credit one, which means that it will be 15,000 words long rather than the 7,000 words of recent years, which we found made it more an extended essay than a dissertation.

I don't think I can write fifteen thousand words on ANYTHING.
