If there's anyone here who's still deciding between doing a single or dual honours degree, you may be interested in part of an email we just got sent.
I don't think I can write fifteen thousand words on ANYTHING.
You really shouldn't let the dissertation aspect be a deciding factor in your degree choice. It is perfectly possible to write 15,000 words - it just requires a lot more reading than normal! The good news is though that outside of normal Japanese language classes you won't have any other classes taking up your time as it is given over to dissertation study!
kimoso
does it have to be in japanese?
No it has to be written in English although as it's a Japanese studies degree, you are required to use a number of Japanese sources in your research.

Bramall you son of a ^$&%$^£^U&$&%£^££^&$£%^"^.
Has to be in English, but you are expected to use Japanese source materials. Not sure if you can substitute for a large translation though. God that would be so much better.
Honestly, I'm beginning to think I'm cursed. First they get rid of the stupid year abroad project... after my year. Then they double the length of the dissertation beginning with my year. Someone must really hate us.
(The project is the only reason I'm awake right now. Doing pie charts at 4am *grumblegrumble*)

mehh that does kinda suck ahhh 20 odd pages shouldnt be too bad if you just do it in small chunks i guess, i seem to always to my coursework about 3 days before it's meant to be handed in and they're about 5 pages each
although on one hand i guess the time taken for the length isn't the issue, rather what the hell you fill the space with lol

Yeah exactly, the longer it gets the more difficult structuring it and thinking up new ideas for it becomes... and that's after thinking up a topic that can sustain you that much reading.
Okay 20 to 5 now, I think I'll finish off this project in the morning. Eyes trying to close on their own

good plan hahaa it already is the morning good luck and all that
Yamanote Line to Shibuya station. Hit the south exit and head over the bridge and at the bottom of the steps, there's a family mart on the right hand side of the street. About a short 5 minute walk to a small junction and The Room is across the road in the basement of the corner building. You'll know when you see it because of the red lantern which you cant miss.
Okay not that hard then Thanks. A guy told me about it - pretty cool club I think? You been then? I was wondering what I would wear to it though in Tokyo as as a backpacker, my clothes are hardly er appropiate. You mentioned earlier you're going to Sakai City; where's that?

Last time i when it was late august! this time i'm going late july - early august...so it should be similar weather XD last time it was sooo humid though haha! x
Oh yer, humidity eurgh. I will be used to it but I suppoer going from mid August through to September should be a bit better than going when you're going! I hope I have clothes warm enough though, though I doubt it would be freezing. You off to Tokyo?

Yeah I've been there a couple of times when they play deep house, they've got a really good schedule so you've always got a different genre of music playing there every night. They don't do Mondays and Wednesdays though, unless they've changed since I last went. Sakai city is in Osaka Prefecture, very nice place, for me it's like home from home.
Late July - mid September , the sun is blazing over Japan and humidity is very high. The only thing I recommend weather wise is a dark umbrella because there's freak days where it does randomly burst with rain and also it's good to keep the Sun off you if you're out on a long random afternoon walk. Not so bad in Tokyo I guess because of all the tall buildings so lots of shade anyhow. Temperature in Osaka last summer was roughly averaging 28C at night and 30+ in the day time. Tokyo was about the same. It's expected to be a hotter summer worldwide this year because of the Sun's new solar cycle.

Osaka and Kansai is worse, because its in a little enclave bay surrounded by mountains. As such, the humidity sorta of lingers in the air. Its much nicer if you go higher up in the mountains and stay away from the low lying cities.
I kinda agree with sorts about the dissertation length. I did a 3,500 word assignment once and to think that a bit more would have constituted my dissertation - its kinda saddening in a way. I feel really sorry for the year above us - who have got mentally shafted.
And thus, with this piece of sticky tape, after just about everything that could've gone wrong going wrong, the project is done. Done Done Done Done Done!
So exhausted.
Also it's about 28-29 degrees in the daytime a lot recently. Came out of nowhere a couple of weeks ago and I got sunburnt like hell. Now I'm just covered in itchy bites Was like this in September when I first arrived too, used to need to stop off at at least two vending machines for ice cold water just to get as far as the station, heh. Vending machines and convenience stores are definitely two of the things I'll miss about this country.
Congratulations! I remember how much of a bitch that project was to get done - especially when it doesnt count for ANYTHING. At least you can spend all of next year telling all the 1st and 2nd years how easy they've got it!

Oh wait haha. The club I've been told about (guy just reminded me on Facebook) is called the Womb. Wrong spelling. Oops. Know where the Womb is though?
Ah I'm looking forward to going to Osaka. Like home eh? Sounds good. About the weather - that's okay then. I'm sending a package home getting rid of clothes before Asia, including t-shirts. Was worried if I'd be too cold in vests; evidently not
Oh and for people who've been to Japan I was just wondering if anyone could help me with time in places please. I don't know how long to spend in places. I'm going to Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima maybe to see a nearby place..maybe it's called Miyajima? And from some of the 3 main cities, I'll see nearby places. Like Nikko in Tokyo, some place by Kyoto, can't remember names. I have 3 weeks. Thanks

Can I do it in a rocking chair starting with 'Back in my day...'?

Well you could easily do Miyajima in a day, there isn't a huge amount to see there. Time your visit for high tide for the floating shrine, spend some time with the deer if you want, climbing the mountain doesn't take that long... you could theoretically do Hiroshima and Miyajima in a day, though if you wanted to take it easy maybe you could allocate 2 days at most.
As for the rest, it really depends what you want to do. I mean shopaholics could spend a week in Tokyo, whereas I don't find much of the stuff there particularly interesting. You'd really need to make some kind of list of the kind of things you'd want to see there (Japan Guide is great for this) and work out from that. 3 weeks is more than enough to see all of those things, though.

Ahh the Womb, I cant remember the exact location but I know it's in Shibuya somewhere. I've never visited there myself, I just remember being given a flyer for it. 3 Weeks is plenty of time to cain all those locations you wanna go, specially if you stay in Osaka equipped with a J.R pass. In my opinion Osaka is more of a centralized point to other places you'd most likely wanna visit. Kyoto is pratically next door, about 20mins or so from Shin-Osaka station. Hiroshima is roughly 3 hours west on the bullet and Tokyo is about 2hrs 30mins east on the bullet. So if you're feeling the need for round 2, you can be back home in short time and return again the next day. Only bad thing about the J.R pass is that the price has gone up sharply due to the declining GBP! You'll still get your moneys worth though. I think thefaceless pretty much nailed it about Tokyo. Also that Japan-Guide website is fantastic for making a personal itinerary!

ahhh i read about the womb in the lonelyplanet book on Japan last night! haha
if it's any help it's spelt Oomu in Japanese because of the alphabet and all that
Oh wait haha. The club I've been told about (guy just reminded me on Facebook) is called the Womb. Wrong spelling. Oops. Know where the Womb is though?:
Back in the day when I was clubbing a lot here (once, Wednesday, then Thursday, then Friday, then Saturday all in a row ) I went to Womb a couple of times (why does everyone feel the need to add "the", I'm sure it's just called "Womb"). It's pretty hidden away on a back-street.
I went as it makes a couple of "top 10 clubs in the World" lists. While it is 4 floor, I went in thinking I was going to see one of the best clubs in the World, and I was pretty disappointed. The bottom floor is pretty tame and more like a bar than a club. The second floor has a huge huge dance floor, the third floor is a typical nightclub-bar type area and the fourth floor is a lounge, VIP-style type area where you can chill out and have a great view over the dance floor. It is impressive, but then entrance is crazy expensive.
One of the most ridiculous things I remember about my nights there was that upon leaving you have all the staff going "shhhh, shhhh" as Womb is (conviently) nestled right in the love hotel district and the hotel managers don't like noisy drunken clubbers making noise and interrupting the noisy drunken clubbers in the hotel rooms, haha!
There are better clubs in Shibuya. I prefer Camelot, 3 dance floors, each one containing a different type of music. Or for value for money, head to Pure. Even though it's pretty small compared to other clubs, it's the only regular "all you can drink" club in Shibuya.
One word of warning though is that if you want to party in Shibuya clubs you'll need an ID showing that you are at least 20 years old. Roppongi they don't care to ID but almost every club in Shibuya does as they are classier establishments. Being 19, I experienced various fun ways to skill my way round the bouncers but in the end an ID is needed. Of course, as it is Japan they have no idea what a real UK ID card looks like...
how many extra modules do you do? I have decided I would also like to learn Chinese
Interesting question put forward here. Does anybody know the answer to this. I'd be interested to take Chinese as an extra module too. Also to those are currently doing/have done the year abroad, did you take two large suitcases or one large one and one medium one ..etc?
