Yer welcome midou-ban.

sounds good frannnyyyy

we almost have 1000 posts on this thread
Haha, yer sounds like a good date. Sunday over Saturday I think; most go up on the Saturday though. Maybe I'll go up earlier and hand in some CVs to be nice and keen.

I seriously have no idea how this thread has lasted like 49 pages. Full of spam half the time I'd say. Shotgun post #1000. I'll go see who has done the most posts. I'll add guy_incognito's to gaijin's as same person..

How much are people thinking for Freshers? I'm a little low on money, so I may scrape together 100quid which I'll have to survive on before I get my loan.

Results are still August aren't they? Don't stay up until midnight and like 1am as they aren't out then! People think they are but they really aren't and the website gets overloaded and super busy so it takes ages to check and they ain't even there.

edit: I'm gutted I'm not top. I've been since first page man:

Nah. Couldn't bring myself to do it.

Where does the time go eh? Seems like only yesterday I was thinking about going up to Sheffield - and now I'm a week away from the end of 2nd year and 3 months away to Japan. 1st year is pretty awesome. The course is hard but not that hard in the grand scheme of things. Second year is a bitch - less lessons, more work, less credit value = pain in the arse. You never know, this exam might get the better of me, and I'll end up resitting. :ninja:

Hopefully not.

Probably should really revive the 'gaijin' account but I can't be arsed. Might try and write something decent up for the year abroad when I'm in Japan (about the whole ryuugakusei seikatsu) - which will be useful for the 2009 entrants. I'm still getting most of the info I need for this YA from the internet and my g/f. Sheffield's information is a little sparse, so I might speak to the YA co-coordinator about that. (Give him his dues, its his first year doing it and he has tried to make it more easier for us.) God bless my Japanese uni for sending no information whatsoever on living and arriving in Japan though. Hiroshima on the oth, have my send my friend a massive booklet.

hey , guy_incognito !

since you are finishing 2nd year , would you please share , what does year 1 cover?

and one more question : i`m accepted and everythings cool but is there any way that i can start from year 2 ? You know , do the exams for year 1 and start year 2 straight away

That's pants! Lets hope they will calm down making a big show of that silly flu virus by the time you're ready to set off. At the moment they're making a right fuss about nothing, masked up panicking. To be fair, it is spreading like wildfire over there though. I'm sure you'll have a fantastic time. Do some blog entries if you have the spare time
Did you get placed somewhere that you wanted/happy with?

My friend in Himeji is making tons of money by selling masks in the shop she works at.

Seems to have died down in the UK and is mostly restricted to mild pockets in Japan.

In Japan it seems to be called 'shin-kei influenza' Where the hell the pig went I'll never know.

I'm happy enough. I was very restricted really, so there was only really a few open options to me given my grades (I rejected Sophia out of preference.) So that left Chuo, Hosei, Rikkyo, ICU or Seijo. Would have preferred Chuo or Rikkyo really as ICU sucks balls (annoyed considering that two people who were allocated to those two unis have since dropped out.) I'll be the only British guy going to Seijo (woop-de-doo) so I better start speaking Japanese quickly. I'm going to Japan to improve my Japanese really, so stuff like number of international students and reputation of the uni is very much low on my agenda.

The only reason that Seijo hasn't really sent me anything is because their international intake is tiny (about 8 to 10 exchange students on average - compared with my g/f's uni [Waseda] which has about 3000.) Therefore they can't really produce anything in detail or have the staff on hand to deal with everything. That said, they have been really patient and nice with me and have answered most of my questions via e-mail. I've heard good things from the girl who was their last year so... yeah. Could be a lot worse really. Only not getting a scholarship sucks, but like I said its not that important - as long I improve my Japanese.

Unless you have done a year at another uni doing intensive Japanese, I very much doubt it. First year covers about 500 kanji, all the JLPT level 3 and 4 grammar and vocab (some of it JLPT 2), plus a lot of listening and speaking stuff. I reckon the listening exercises easily are about A-level standard. We pretty much cover the Japanese A-level syllabus in the first 3 months. The postgraduates and exchange students (I think 4 in total in our year?) had already done about two years Japanese at their unis or had lived in Japan for acceptance direct into the second year language classes.

Keep in mind that the pace of Japanese in second year is extremely intensive and geared towards the aptitude you developed in year 1. If you are not adjusted to the pace, you will find it really hard to keep up.

In all my experience here, it has been referred to as buta influenza, i.e. pig flu.

It has died down here, if by died down you mean that my work has told me that I no have to wear my mask at all times if I am outside of my room, though they still recommended it. However, I still have to disinfectant my hands, take my temperature and gargle before I sign in at work. I expect the craziness to rocket back up as soon as we get the first outbreak here in Tokyo. It's inevitable right?

First two cases of H1N1 influenza has already hit Tokyo, Wednesday 20th May, two students.

Seems like the informal media definition. The generic medical term for it in Japanese is: 新型インフルエンザ

I think this is just a term for all specific pandemics. But yeah, it is called 豚インフルエンザ informally. The reason that this is underplayed and not used formally is because of the Confucian symbolism of the Pig (boar) - which is considered an animal of fortune in Asian cultures. I would imagine catching a deadly virus is not so much a piece of good luck. Hence they tend not to attribute these things with animals.

And I'm not making this up btw...

Gah, I think I jinxed it. Today I got a text from my work that a person had been infected in Tokyo, and it was in Sumida, the ward I work in. Back to mask 24/7 :frown:

Anyway... Japanese at Sheffield and all that.

HA OOPS I JUST TURNED CAPS ON AND NOW IT WON'T GO OFF. NO COURSE I DIDN'T COUNT, HA I'M NOT THAT SAD, NOR DO I HAVE THE TIME.

Ha the time difference is a bit dodge if that's what you're referring to. Yer I get back 5th and get up on 20th. 15 days of rest, re-adjusting and maybe learn some kanji aha. I'll probably be depressed ha. I don't know who'll make 1000. Probably a random stranger. Okay just realised caps is off now. Hmm.

Hope I don't get flu in Aug/Sept though maybe I'll wear a mask anyway.
I'm officially on the course. *.*

Good choice, go Sheffield.

Okay was thinking today, as I've time to kill on the net (have to spend a minimum of 30mins which I didn't realise before grrr) maybe I'll make a Facebook group. I'll go look at the 2008 one.
