I'm currently in Year 12 and upon researching careers for work shadowing, I've discovered how much I'd like to become a doctor. However I haven't yet completed any of the necessary experience nor have I prepared myself for any form of UKCAT/ BMAT.

I might be able to get a 5 day placement shadowing staff in the Geriatrics ward of my local hospital, and I'm thinking of trying to apply for volunteering at care homes this summer.

Do you think it's too late/ not practical to apply for medicine to start in 2019? I have also thought about taking a gap year to build up my personal statement- is this a better option?

You sit the UKCAT from June-October and bmat sometime in November (I think). Booking for the UKCAT opens in May so you have plenty of time. You also have the whole summer to do volunteering and work experience.

Thank you, how many weeks work experience would you say a good application needs?

i'd say maybe a week in a GP, week in a hospital and about 6 weeks volunteering - but honestly, volunteer for as long as you can, they love the commitment
