I recently got a new puppy, and everyone has wanted to see him. Theres a little girl on my street (she's 12, first year of high school) that comes to see him every now and again and its essentially become a bit of a routine as she has become quite close with me and my mum (dad is usually working when she comes).
Today, during one of these visits, I show her something about fashion or whatever on Instagram, and she asks to follow me, so I let her and as I go to follow back, I see that my best friend, who is 18, is following her already and has zero mutual followers. I asked the girl to see if there is anyone else following her that he follows, and there isn't, so she would not have come up on the suggested profiles section on the Instagram app. He has also liked a picture of hers in a mirror showing off a new tracksuit. I found it weird enough that he was following her, let alone that he must have searched her name somehow as he followed her first (I asked her) and is liking her pictures.
When I asked him if he knew her age (in the hopes he had not realised and had made a simple human error, and thus once realising after me telling him, he would unfollow her), he replied instantly with the correct age. How would he know that? Why is he still following her if he knows her age? He always insists that he won't date any girls younger than 16 and he insists this particularly often (like before this, its seemed weird). I've discussed it with my other best mate, but he doesn't know what to do either.
    What should we do?

Erm are you a boy yourself? This is strange...
tbh she’s 12 that’s really young I feel like you should catch her parents at some point and just have a little word. Say she’s always popping round and that she has a guy your age on her Instagram and you feel like she should be hanging around with kids her age. And make it clear that it isn’t because she’s irritating or bad company or a bad kid or anything it’s just that you reckon it’s best if she socialises with kids her own age and you wonder if anything’s up?

Maybe they are family friends of some kind? A liked instagram picture legitimately means nothing if you don’t know their actual relation between one another

Did you ask how he knows her? It does seem like a bit of a red flag, but without more information it’s just speculation. You don’t want to do something that could end up with your friend being wrongfully labelled a pedo.

Maybe check out who he follows and see if this is an anomaly or a trend. If he’s following a lot of young girls on insta that’s something to take seriously.

seems a bit odd ...but would you have made this topic if your friend was a female and started following her?

until he actually starts hitting on her or something don't go labeling him as anything

He probably just noticed that youre following her and decided to follow her too. Insta lets your followers know when you follow or like something so he probably just added her cause you did.

It saddens me that a 12 year has an Instagram in the first place
