    15) a x10^4 + a x10^2 = 24 240 where a is a number.
    Work out a x10 ^4 x a x 10^ 2
    Give your answer in standard form.

    Well observe firstly that ax10^4 = 24x10^3 --> ax10^4 = 2.4x10^4 --> a=2.4

    You can finish the question off.

    I'm really confused with what you have done

    The question says:

    ax10^4 + ax10^2 = 24 240.

    I'll provide some more answers:

    Method 1:

    Observe ax10^2 = 240 --> 100a=240-->a=2.4 (or ax10^4 = 24000 --> a=2.4)

    Method 2:

    10,000a + 100a = 24240 --> 10,100a=24240 --> a=2.4

    Method 3:

    a(10^4) + a(10^2) = 10^2[a(10^2 + a) = 100(101)a = 24240 --> 101a=242.4-->a=2.4

    Oh make sense now thank you soo much.
