Looking at child nursing course, is there a choice to do a elective placement abroad if so when and for how long?

This will vary year by year depending whether the university has the time/resources to facilitate this. I would advise against choosing your university based on their elective as I have seen these cut at the last minute and people left disappointed. Generally your electives abroad are 2-4 weeks, but can be very hard to organise as the placements need to meet the NMC standards in order to count towards your hours. If you do want to do an elective, it's easier to do it with a provider your university has partnered with.
