What does it mean to 'pigeon hole' a topic?

The idiom has a few meanings, just to name a few:
To categories a topic into a neat but potentially overly simple category.
To store an item/subject away for later use.
To purposely set a subject/topic aside with the intention of ignoring it for a period of time (potentially indefinitely).

So the idiom is heavily context dependent.
    Hoped that helped.

The most common meaning is the first one.
