I'm finishing up my creative writing folio at the moment, and I'm freaking out that I've plagiarised something.
I haven't directly copied any images or sentences, but I have taken 'inspiration' from some I've found in books that I quite liked. Like I said I haven't copied anything word for word, but I have taken the idea of them and then rewrote/re-visualized them.
Will I get penalized for plagiraism?

As long as you give proper recognition to the respective scholars then it is fine. Taking the idea and using it for own work can be classed plagiarism if you haven't referenced it properly.

Can you reference someone in a creative writing piece?

It depends at what level you are writing, if this is university standards then yes, citations and reference lists are necessary, if its a level or equivalent then probably not, just make sure that you know for certain, some will take plagiarism very seriously.
