I’ve been trying to get as much experience as I can, so I’ve applied to shadowing at a hospital and I’ve done some dentistry shadowing, still need to ask my GP to shadow and and I’ve planned to volunteer at a charity in summer. I’ll currently volunteering in a care Home but I need more experience and I don’t know what I should do , not to mention how difficult it is to get a hold of it! I would love to go abroad and volunteer but don’t have the money at the moment. So what are medical schools looking for in terms of experience ?

Nope u don’t seem serious about it and it shows complacency and lack of dedication to one place. Stick to shadowing ur gp (best thing you can do) and don’t move to another place. It shows lack of commitment and universities would see it as u not taking your work experience seriously

Don’t listen to the guy above...

I’ve just applied for medicine, and received 4 interviews, and 1 offer so far (waiting to hear back from the other three) and I just wanted to say that what you’ve got is absolutely amazing!

With work experience, you only need to be able to explain what you saw/how it impacted you in your personal statement, there isn’t much of a requirement because they understand how hard it is to get it!
However, saying this, work experience is key for interviews. They LOVE it when you link in your work experience to questions they’ve asked you, so it’s best to get as much as possible...

I would recommend to anyone a GP placement, as primary care is something they will pick up on a lot (and the GP gateway method of the NHS). Also, maybe some secondary care - e.g. in a hospital, so you are able to talk about the differences if need be. Maybe, if it’s able, look into palliative care, as a tertiary care option, however, this isn’t crucial as it won’t really be asked about, but it’s nice just to have!

And the last thing I’d recommend is long term work experience (e.g. like the care home you mentioned!). They would love to see that you’d done a long term dedication placement, and it shows you are more serious about medicine!

One last thing - I would 100% recommend you keep a diary of what you saw, and what interested you while you were on a placement. Helps when it comes to writing a person statement and when it comes to interviews!

    Good luck for your application!

I feel as if maths and chemistry came easy to me, and I wasn’t as worried about these as I was biology (especially with the new spec being really hard!) I would 100% recommend just doing lots of past papers as you’ll learn the mark scheme and the questions they like to ask (especially chemistry and biology). And thank you!

    Hi!

I've just applied and have got 2 offers so far and I did a one year-long volunteer placement, a week placement at another hospice and shadowed a dentist ages ago.

    I haven't actually shadowed a doctor before!

What you've got there seems fine, I'd just keep it up with the care home and you'll have more than enough. I know a guy who went abroad for 4 weeks to Nepal after the earthquake to volunteer and he got 4 rejections, so going abroad isn't a must do (although on paper this looks really impressive).

    Hope that helps!
