"I inspect the pit, candles weeping wax over the malformed skeletons; bones filled with fear and depravity, frozen in time with their last call for help before meeting their demise."

Should I be using a ; or a : or a - ? and does the rest of the sentance make sense? thanks

I think a semi colon applies when you're connecting two independent clauses. For example:
I have a big test tomorrow; I can't go out today.

The sentence doesn't really make sense -

"I inspect the pit, candles weeping wax over the malformed skeletons; bones filled with fear and depravity, frozen in time with their last call for help before meeting their demise."

It should go something like this:

"I inspect the pit and see candles weeping wax over the malformed skeletons; bones filled with fear and depravity, frozen in time with their last call for help before meeting their demise."

You pretty much use a semi colon (in simple terms) when you're joining two separate sentences together in order to structure your sentence.
