I have offers from some universities but I am unsure about whether I would like to go to them after hearing some negative things.

If I wanted to apply to other unis through extra could I email them beforehand to get an idea of whether they would be likely to give me an offer or is this a bad idea?

It’s not only not a bad idea it’s what you are recommended to do.

Phoning is better. You can get answers from 5-10 in an hour. With emails you could be waiting a week or more.

Are universities likely to give a definite answer? Or are they likely to say one thing and do another?

They won’t give a definitive answer/promise over the phone (they can’t without seeing your full application) but they should be able to give you some information about whether they actually have vacancies (a lot of courses are in extra by mistake) and if so whether you would have a chance.

Like clearing that’s why it’s a good idea to talk to a good few universities. You can then apply to your favourite but if you’re not successful with that choice then you have backup choices to go to.
