I’m looking at joining the Royal Navy as a Seamen Specialist as this role fits what I’d like to do the most but I’m very unsure about life at sea etc. Can anyone give me any advice or first hand experience?

    Hi there

I come from a Royal Navy background and currently have a FAAOA bursary from the navy. I have spent two weeks at sea thanks to having family in the force so can help.

Life at sea is a change for those who have never experienced it. You will certainly not be bored as there is always something to do especially as a seaman specialist. Everyone who serves in the RN will get sea sick. For the first week of deployment you will be sick as everyone is prone to it, its not natural, but after that you won't be sea sick as your body adjusts.

Living on board ships is exactly the same as living in a mini city, you will know everyone and everyone will know you. On board there is recreational space for you chill out in and the NAAFI (shop on a ship or base) you can purchase your own personal food. It's like having a corner shop on board.

If you go down to your local AFCO and explain your thoughts about life at sea and ask for work experience they may offer you some. If you do have work experience you will either be on a base where you can shadow someone who be with a crew most likely on a P2000 or mine hunter to experience life at sea.

Hope this help you and please keep my updated!
