What are we considering budget here? Wacom Intuos are basically your entry level tablets and in all honesty, Wacom does do some of the best stuff. Unless you find something cheaper like an older Bamboo second hand you are probably best off going for an Intuos. I personally started with a Bamboo and upgraded to a Cintiq 13HD, I'd highly recommend the Cintiq if you ever want to spend that kind of money but I appreciate it is probably outside your budget now. I don't know if things changed but from what I remember Wacom patented their pen technology, so while you might find similar devices you'll struggle to find something that's a real alternative. Personally I think you pay for what you get here, I've seen cheaper tablets that just don't feel the same. Wacom all the way IMO.
