I’m appealing to a sixth form and I’m not too sure what to write as my grounds for appeal. I have all graded predicted above a 7, mostly 8s including some 9s, so I met the academic requirements. But the over subscription criteria was about when you were baptised/having a brother or sister in the school- things I cannot change. I really want to get into this school, but I need as much help as I can writing an appeals statement and writing my grounds for appeal! Does anyone have any tips/ what was successful for them? Thanks!!

So most schools don't have the capacity to take everyone who applies to them, and they are allowed to set oversubscription criteria. If it's a religious school, they can have religious requirements, and siblings attending the school is a common thing. You can't appeal on the basis that the admission criteria are unfair.

Appeals to secondary schools are usually based on a "balance of prejudice"- this means you have to prove to the panel that it would be more detrimental to you to not be able to go to this school than for the school to admit an extra pupil. You can't appeal against other schools, only for the one you want to go to.

Strong arguments would be if they offer a-levels or a combination of a-levels that you can't do elsewhere that are relevant to your interests/future career plans. Another argument might be that they offer extracurricular opportunities that you couldn't access elsewhere and would be especially beneficial to you. If you have any particular needs that this school can cater for especially well, that would be another argument.

If you can show the school has admitted extra pupils in sixth form before and coped, then this may help your case, but you would still need a case.

Why do you especially want to go to this school? Are there other options you could apply to?

Is there a waiting list you could go on, in case others miss their grades and a space becomes available?

Appeals only work on certain grounds. Read the rules and see if any of them fit your circumstances i.e they made a mistake etc.

If not you can make a general appeal stating why you are a strong candidate, but tbh I wouldnt hold your breath. They normally only let appeals through if you have justified it on one of their specified grounds. Ask to go on the waiting list as well. It isnt a re-run of your application.
