Prospective medical applicants (maybe less so actual medical students and practicing physicians and surgeons) are pretty obsessed with prestige and "rankings" and so on, no doubt following from their quest for academic "excellence" (i.e. top exam grades). Both Oxford and Cambridge are at the top of such prestige considerations, but Oxford has, for some reason, some special notoriety or prestige for Medicine (like Cambridge for Maths). Whether this actually makes a measurable difference in ones' career is pretty debatable though.

Also as indicated above, given the fairly narrow range of acceptable grades/backgrounds (at least as perceived by applicants) for medicine, a lot of people applying to medicine just, at all, are likely to at least nominally be in the grade range for Oxford. Thus, many will want to throw their name into the pot, so to speak, just because they are on paper able to be considered. Whether this is to their benefit or detriment I can't say, I'm sure someone more statistically minded can comment on any biases of relevance in this thought process.

Because its so great of course.

Or because its much smaller than Cambridge, but applicants don't really consider that when applying

Measurable? Postgrad exam pass rates will do for that!

Sizeable would, of course, be a different question :p:
