Gravity is always directed down towards the centre of the Earth.

So if upwards is positive then acceleartion due to gravity is negative and if downwards is positive then gravity is positive.

You can decide which way is negative or positive for yourself.

Logically, in my opinion, gravity is negative going up and positive going down.

When you're going up, you're opposing gravity, so it makes more sense to put it as negative.

i dont understand

how do we know if upwards is positive?

Is this A Level maths module M1 that you are talking about?
8. you can decide for a particular question if you wish to treat the downwards direction as positive.

Please post an example question with your working and we can show you what you're doing wrong.

does it matter if i get gravity as negative or positive? the batman guy said you just choose

It can be either depending on which direction you choose to be positive. In an M1 kinematics question you always start by deciding which direction is positive.

An example question would help.

You decide, it's up to you.

Just take upwards as +ve all the time if you want.

You choose this yourself. You can choose either direction and you'll get the right answer assuming your working is valid.

E.g. if I choose downwards as positive then acceleration due to gravity is 9.8. If I choose upwards as positive then acceleration due to gravity is -9.8.
