I intend to meet a friend to discuss about the possibility of working together before I register as an Independent Contractor, but I honestly don't know how to begin to talking about payment. I don't want them to think I'm volunteering.

I know I can't just say "You have to pay me" because that would be rude and unprofessional.

How do I even begin talking about payment?

    Thanks.

Just tell them you want to work together in a paid role.

First of all, is your friend aware that they will have to pay for your services? The context of how you decided to work together might help you guess what they're assuming.

Otherwise, you want them to be completely clear what your contract with them will look like. Just ask them: "...and what figure were you thinking of in terms of my fee?" or "What would you expect to pay for this kind of work?"
