How would I become an optometrist?

So I would like to have a job in the field of healthcare, however, I don't think the full medicine thing is for me so I thought maybe I could do optometry or dentistry.
I know that I would have to do an optometrist degree, but I don't know what would happen afterward and the obvious question, what are the salaries like?
