Horrible problem - 'accidents'

Last year I bumped into a guy in the street and he went MENTAL at me - I didn't hurt him or anything, he just went crazy. He was screaming at me, and as he did so, I wet myself. I don't know why - I think it might have been out of fear or shock or something. It was a horrible thing to happen, but I couldn't help it.

Today a new teacher of mine called me up to the front of the class and started shouting at me (for some normal, silly school reason.) I don't normally get in trouble, and the shock of it made me wet myself again. I couldn't help it, it just happened and in front of the whole class it was dreadful.

Has anyone got any idea why this happens? I don't normally have any bladder issues, it just seems to be when I get scared I have an accident. Any idea how I can prevent this from happening?

It's scaring me now, in case it happens again :frown:

O.P. go to your G.P.

I'm assuming your female? You need to tighten your PC muscles, your pelvic floor. Google it, it's easy enough to fix.

OP: if you're being serious... well, do you get anxiety attacks often? If you are a naturally anxious person, do you find that anxiety has (in the past) led to a feeling of needing to urinate? That's fairly normal. Losing control of your bladder completely sounds more like a bladder infection/STI.

Sorry i dont really have anything important to add other than maybe its a mild social phobia, i.e. your fine normaly, but when you get pressure put on you in a public place you cant handle it.

The science of people wetting themeselves when they are scared is that our instincts tell us we want to get away from watever is threatening us or scarring us, so we wett ourselves to run faster.
It just sounds like its down the the shock/fear. When you're in shock and/or sacred your nervous system goes crazy (a mixture of your parasympathetic and sympathetic systems), wetting yourself can be one of the effects.
Was it like a proper pee or just a bit of water?
If it was just a bit it could be 'stress incontinence' which happens to some people when they cough/laugh etc.
It sounds like it could be anxiety - do you have any other symptoms of that?
It might be worth asking your doctor about it on the off chance you have some sort of infection, but if you are female chances are you need to do some pelvic floor exercises.
Yeah, OP, I'd go to see your Dr about this. It's most likely absolutely nothing. I'm sure we've all wet ourselves when we were scared - I know I have, when I was six and standing onstage infront of an assembly hall full of Parents during our School play - but it's really common for people to do things beyond their control when they're scared, worried, under pressure... one of my friends laughs when he's nervous, which as you can guess, really isn't the best thing to happen in a few situations.

Go and see your GP. Believe me, they will have seen people with problems similar to yours in the past, and they will be able to advise you on what to do. There are ways and means of sorting this out - whether it's something like counselling to help figure out why this happens to you and how to stop it, or exercises to help you strengthen your pelvic muscles, or even using pads so that you're protected in the event of an accident.

Does it happen every time you get scared? Or just on some occasions? I ask because some women find that bladder control decreases when they're due, or on, their period - so if there is some sort of pattern to the times when you have a weaker bladder, perhaps you could try utilising some sort of pad during those times?

But in any instance, your first port of call should be your GP.

I hope things get sorted for you soon.

Assuming the OP is not >40 or a multip and she doesn't describe stress incontinence it's more than a little unlikely to be related to laxity in the pelvic musculature.

wear pads/nappies. they make them discrete enough these days. my friend has a similar (but worse) problem

Those things aren't made to hold an actual flow of urine, just drops and little leaks; it wouldn't help in the slightest if what the OP is experiencing is heavy.

Furthermore, I doubt the OP would feel comfortable wearing an adult nappy.

I've heard of similar things happening though only in cases of extreme fear and pressure, such as in war zones etc. And I heard on a documentary that animals do it too when threatened, I think because it makes it easier for them to run or something?

I don't think it sounds like there's something wrong with your body because you know what's causing it. Go to the doctor and they'll probably be able to do something about it. And as said, don't worry that the doc will think you're wierd or anything because they've seen everything already.

Oh, and also, you know when you laugh uncontrollably, you sometimes get the urge to pee? It might be kind of like that. That may just be me.
I've just realised that this thread has been dug up from February...

GeographyEm20, don't do that.
