So there's a few files I accidentally deleted on my laptop, how can I get them back without having to download or buy any software?

If you've cleared your recycle bin then your only hope is recovery software. There is freeware software that can do this (I've used Recuva in the past with varying degrees of success, but it's legitimate trustworthy software). However, this will only work if the deleted file is on a hard disk - it will not work for SSDs or memory sticks. If you've deleted a file on an SSD or memory stick then it's gone, I'm afraid.

I swear this is true? I deleted a bunch of important files from my SSD a couple of years ago and I'm pretty sure that I read that it was unrecoverable. It certainly was unrecoverable in my case.

That's really not the case lol - if the data hasn't been overwritten, it can usually be recovered, irrespective of the storage medium.

The recycle bin keeps copies of things you've deleted for a certain amount of time/ until it's full. If it was something you created on a programme like word or PowerPoint you could also check if that saved a backup. You can also check you don't have things backing up to one drive or anything like that.
Past that I think it's a matter for recovery programmes.

    Right click on the drive/folder.
    Select properties
Go to the “previous versions “ tab
    Enjoy
