Hi everyone, I’ve recently applied to the inner temple for a BPTC scholarship. I have a disability and mentioned this in my form however it never came up when I went for my scholarship interview? I sent a follow up email saying if they needed any follow up information to let me know as it didn’t come up in what was a short interview. They sent a blunt response back saying they cannot take any additional information. Has anyone else had any problems with disbaility when making similar applications? I am newly diagnosed and wondering how to deal with it in a competitive field!

If you've mentioned it in their form then I can't imagine what more info they would need and why it would need to come up at interview? Did you need reasonable adjustments and were they made?

Yes adjustments were made, I thought it was relevant to how much funding you might need? The only way to mention it on the form is to say the name of the condition not how it would affect you during your Bptc year so I thought they would ask more information about it, as well as how it affected uni grades etc. Just wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience

Does it specify that you will receive a different amount? Did your referee mention how it affected your grades and did you submit extenuating circumstances?

Don’t think I need extenuating circumstances as I’ve got a 2:1 and no no ones said anything about if you get a certain amount and I don’t think there’s any guidance on how you should submit information. My references didn’t know about my condition

Well in that case it doesn’t sound like there was need to let them know anything more than you have and as they’ve said they’ll ask if they need more info. Good luck!

I hope it doesn’t matter, just don’t want to be screwed over because I haven’t got a first because of I’ll-health! Hopefully they won’t mind! Thanks for your help!

If it is on the form they consider it. They would only ask a question on it at interview if they needed any more information. Clearly the info that you put on your form was enough

Inner has a scholarship purely for Disabled students - having looked over it, it is very similar to how the DSA works. Have you applied/seen it?

That's mainly for pupils not for the BPTC. Still worth looking into it.

The fact that you're disabled will most likely not play a huge part in whether you get a scholarship. I.e. it won't be the deciding factor as to whether you get one (otherwise that would sort of be discrimination to non-disabled people) - Obviously, it will depend on your inn, but I know that some inns are more liberal than others and some assess scholarships differently to others.

Middle for example assess based on income, whilst Lincoln's is well known for awarding on merit, so depending on your inn, they may consider your disability.

If you included it on your form, that's all you can do. If you emailed them to let them know too, great, but it's on your form, and the reason it's there is so they can take note, if they need to. Chances are they just needed a yes/no and they wouldn't ask you about it in interview because why would you wrongly declare it? Don't worry, and best of luck waiting to hear your results.
